Twiggy
Twiggy was the first ever supermodel, 35 years later she is still an icon recognised by the fashion world. She was not only an icon in fashion but she was also idolised by teenaged girls over the 60's. Twiggy worked with top photographers like Melvin Sokolsky, Bert Stem etc... Her image was in the front covers of the most elitist fashion magazines such as Vogue , Harpers Bazaar and her own magazine Twiggy: Her Mod, Mod Teen World (published in 1966). She was so famous that her one of her photographs was sent into space in a time capsule.
Not only was she modelling during the 60's she also recorded her first single in 1966 called "Beautiful Dreams" released by Ember records first in the UK and then across the globe. That same year she also released her own line of clothing called Twiggy Dress aimed at teenaged girls also the first Twiggy Barbie doll was released. Bert Stem made several film documentaries for ABC network about Twiggy in the US such as "Twiggy In New York", "Twiggy In Hollywood" etc... She also had a film documentary done back in the UK when she was at home with her family and working, the film was titled "Twiggy".
In 1968 Twiggy's single "Beautiful Dreams" reached number 1 on the charts in Japan and she featured in adverts for large companies such as Toyota Cars. She also took part in a fashion show at the Budowaki stadium. Her dress line was eventually released in Germany and she was featured in Queen Magazine just like other famous icons like Ginger Rogers, Marylin Monroe etc...
In 1970 Twiggy was featured in "This is Your Life" a tv show broadcasted on ITV1 and she starred in a commercial for diet cola which was directed by Melvin Sokolsky whom she had worked with before. Twiggy was also cast in the film "The Boy Friend" which then resulted to her retirement from modelling in 1970.
Even though her modelling career ended in 1970 in order to pursue other career paths she still did some modelling projects one being posing as a pin up for david Bowie's cover of Pin Ups album. Twiggy has also appeared as a judge in America's Next Top Model produced by ex-supermodel Tyra Banks and now she is seen in the Marks and Spencer's adverts.
